Monroe College Tech Challenge 2016
Monroe College is excited to announce its first annual Tech Challenge for high school students in the tri-state area on Saturday, April 30 on our Bronx campus. If you are a high school junior or senior with a passion for technology and an interest in applying it to solve creative challenges, this is the event for you.
Monroe’s Tech Challenge is a chance for the next generation of coders, app builders, cyber-security professionals and robotic engineers to show what they’re made of and win some valuable awards for their efforts. We’re putting together a great panel of judges, all on the front lines of technology design and innovation, to determine the winners.
All registered participants will receive a Raspberry Pi, a tiny, versatile computer that’s optimized for learning coding, a $50 Apple gift card, and three-months of premium access to Coding Academy, the online source for learning how to program through fun projects. The first and second place winning teams will also be awarded academic scholarships to Monroe College. Cash honorariums will also be provided to their sponsoring schools.
The Tech Challenge is open to all high school juniors and seniors. Participants must work in three-person teams and have a sponsoring educator or mentor with them on the day of the event. You can bring your own laptop or use ours, and use whatever coding language you prefer. Please note, multiple teams from the same high school can participate.
We’ll reveal the details on the specific challenges two days before the event to ensure a level playing field. You will choose to perform one of four challenges, which will include:
-Creating an app to serve a specific, practical purpose
-Upgrading a dull, static website to one that’s more dynamic and exciting
-A robotics challenge to perform a specific task/action
-Applying cyber-security protocols to fight a specific unauthorized action
Prizes / Awards:
In addition to a Raspberry Pi computer and 3 months of premium access to Code Academy, members of the winning teams will receive:
First place: $16,000 scholarship to Monroe, Microsoft Surface 3 tablet
Second place: $12,000 scholarship to Monroe, Microsoft Surface 3 tablet
Third place: Amazon Kindle reader
